Starting from the July–August 2025 academic session, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has prohibited universities and institutions from offering health sciences courses through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or online modes. The restriction covers a wide spectrum of disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, AYUSH, and allied health programs, along with related subjects such as psychology, microbiology, and biotechnology.
The UGC has clarified that any approvals previously granted for such courses in ODL or online formats will now stand cancelled. All universities and distance education providers have been directed to discontinue fresh admissions into these programs from the 2025–26 academic year. Non-compliance with this directive may result in the withdrawal of recognition for the concerned institutions.
